This Tuareg handcrafted bag, made in the heart of the Sahara, is a travel or storage bag that embodies the very essence of nomadic life. More than just a container, it is a symbol of identity, prestige, and adaptation to an extreme environment.
Material and Traditional Tanning:
Made from goat or camel hides, this bag is the result of a millennia-old vegetable tanning process. The artisans use extracts from local plants, such as acacia bark, to obtain leather of exceptional suppleness and strength, capable of withstanding the rigors of the desert. The leather’s natural patina, ranging from warm ochre to deep browns, deepens with time and use.
Decoration and Symbolism:
The bag’s surface is a canvas for intricate geometric ornamentation. Engraved, punched, and braided patterns cover every square centimeter. It features traditional Tuareg symbols, such as southern crosses, diamonds and broken lines, acting as protective talismans and markers of clan identity.
